The first bar built on cassava and plantain fufu
Under-fuelling isn’t always obvious. In sports science it’s known as Low Energy Availability (LEA), and when prolonged it can develop into RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport).
Research in nutrition consistently shows that during sustained activity the body typically requires around 30–60g of carbohydrate per hour.
Yet many people — athletes included — consistently fall short of matching intake to output.
The body adapts to underfuelling. But those adaptations come at a cost: fatigue, slower recovery, hormonal disruption, brain fog, increased injury risk, and reduced performance over time. Energy availability is not just a performance metric — it underpins cognitive function, mood stability, and everyday resilience.
Most snack bars are built around protein targets, calorie restriction, or ultra-processed “health” positioning. RED-Scue takes a different approach: carbohydrates as the primary fuel system for energy, focus, movement, and recovery.
At the core are cassava root flour and plantain fufu — traditional carbohydrate staples used across endurance cultures for generations. They provide steady, usable glucose, the body’s preferred fuel during sustained effort, and support glycogen replenishment for recovery and repeat performance.
Plantain contributes potassium, vitamin B6, magnesium, and fibre, supporting muscle function, hydration balance, and energy metabolism.
We then layer in functional whole-food ingredients: baobab for vitamin C and gut support, moringa for iron and antioxidant activity, beetroot for nitric oxide production and blood flow, dates for fast carbohydrate availability, and nuts and seeds for fats, minerals, and satiety.
Together they support energy stability, recovery, and metabolic resilience.
Each bar provides ~40g of carbohydrates, sitting within the commonly referenced 30–60g/hour endurance fuelling range, making it a practical option for pre-training, between-meal, or sustained activity support.
Across cultures, cassava and plantain have long been staple energy foods for sustained labour, endurance, and recovery.
Even at elite level, athletes continue to rely on simple carbohydrate foundations when output is high, because performance is ultimately limited by carbohydrate availability under load.
Most people aren’t lacking discipline. They’re lacking usable carbohydrate availability for the demands they place on their body.
