What is RED-Scue?

RED-Scue is a food-first, carbohydrate-led bar designed to support energy availability, training demands, and recovery. It is intended to make consistent fuelling more accessible in everyday life and sport.

It is the first bar made using cassava and fufu-inspired carbohydrate ingredients, bringing traditional real-food energy sources into modern sports nutrition.

Why was RED-Scue created?

RED-Scue was created to address a growing issue in sport and society: chronic underfuelling and low energy availability.

Many active people unintentionally under-eat due to:

  • lack of time
  • diet culture and food restriction trends
  • misinformation about carbohydrates
  • appetite suppression from training or stress
  • over-focus on protein over total energy intake

This leads to a widespread but often unrecognised issue: insufficient energy for daily function, training, and recovery.

Who is RED-Scue for?

RED-Scue is designed for anyone with increased energy demands who wants a practical, food-first way to fuel. This includes:

  • Endurance athletes, runners, cyclists, triathletes, and team-sport athletes
  • Gym-goers and active individuals
  • People at risk of under-fuelling or low energy availability (LEA)
  • Busy professionals, parents, students, and shift workers who need convenient energy on the go
  • Those looking for greater carbohydrate diversity in their diet
  • Individuals who struggle with traditional sports nutrition products such as gels

What are RED-S and low energy availability (LEA), and who do they affect?

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) describes the physiological consequences of long-term low energy availability (LEA).

LEA occurs when energy intake is consistently too low to support:

  • training load
  • basic physiological function
  • recovery and adaptation

This is not a body size or aesthetic issue — it is an energy availability issue affecting health and performance systems.

RED-S and low energy availability can affect anybody: any gender, age, body size, or sport.

How is RED-Scue different from other bars?

Most bars are designed around:

  • high protein positioning
  • low-calorie or diet-focused marketing
  • ultra-processed formulations
  • isolated ingredients like maltodextrin

RED-Scue is different because it is:

  • carbohydrate-first for energy availability
  • the first built from cassava and fufu
  • designed for digestion under training stress
  • free from maltodextrin
  • free from potassium sorbate
  • formulated using apple cider vinegar (ACV) as part of its preservation approach
  • focused on fuelling consistency, not restriction

It is the first product designed specifically around underfuelling risk and energy availability.

Does RED-Scue offer subscriptions?

Yes, subscriptions are designed to make consistent fuelling easier and more affordable, and they typically include:

  • Regular scheduled deliveries (so you don’t run out of fuel)
  • Discounted pricing vs one-off purchases (e.g. subscribe & save offers)
  • Flexible frequency options (bi-monthly or monthly) Save 5-10%.
  • Pause or cancel flexibility (so you can adjust when needed after 3 deliveries)

Subscriptions are especially useful for athletes or active individuals who want consistent energy availability without gaps in nutrition.

What GF flours do RED-Scue contain?

Cassava, fufu, and plantain are traditional carbohydrate-rich foods that have supported energy and daily activity for generations.

Beyond carbohydrates, they also contain naturally occurring vitamins and minerals that support normal body function and overall nutrition.

Natural nutrients found in these foods

Cassava

Cassava provides carbohydrate energy along with small amounts of:

  • Vitamin C (supports normal immune function and antioxidant protection)
  • Manganese (supports normal metabolism and energy production)
  • Folate (supports normal cell function)

It is naturally gluten-free and easy to digest.

Fufu (cassava- and plantain-based)

Fufu made from cassava and plantain provides carbohydrate energy along with naturally occurring nutrients depending on preparation, including:

  • Potassium (supports normal muscle function and hydration balance)
  • Vitamin B6 (supports normal energy metabolism)
  • Vitamin C (supports normal immune function)

Plantain (commonly used in fufu)

Plantain contributes:

  • Potassium (supports normal muscle contraction and electrolyte balance)
  • Vitamin B6 (supports normal energy metabolism)
  • Fibre (supports normal digestive function)

Why this matters for fuelling

These foods are not just sources of carbohydrates.

They provide a real-food matrix of energy + micronutrients, supporting:

  • Energy production
  • Muscle function
  • Hydration balance
  • Digestive health
  • Everyday nutritional support

Which athletes fuel with cassava & fufu?

If you've never heard of them, you're not alone.

Long before modern sports nutrition existed, carbohydrate-rich foods formed the foundation of endurance diets.

Today, similar real-food, high-carbohydrate staples are part of the broader nutritional patterns that support some of the world’s greatest endurance athletes, including Eliud Kipchoge, Joshua Cheptegei, and Brigid Kosgei.

Cassava is a naturally carbohydrate-rich root vegetable, similar to potato or sweet potato. It is one of the world's most widely consumed staple foods and has fuelled communities across Africa, South America, Asia, and the Caribbean for generations. Naturally gluten-free and easy to digest, cassava has long been valued as a reliable source of energy.

Fufu is a traditional staple food enjoyed across many African and Caribbean cultures. It is commonly made from ingredients such as cassava and plantain. For millions of people, fufu isn't a trend or speciality food — it's everyday fuel.

At RED-Scue, we take inspiration from these traditional foods and bring them into a modern approach to fuelling. By combining cassava and plantain, we create a broader range of carbohydrates rather than relying on a single source — a concept known as carbohydrate diversity.

Why focus on carbohydrates?

Most active people already eat plenty of protein — many eat 30–50% more than recommended — yet still experience fatigue, injury, and burnout. You can’t fuel training, hormones, brain function, or recovery on protein alone.

Carbs are essential for energy, recovery, and performance. For 1+ hour sessions, 30-60g carbs are recommended, which is why our 100g bars contain 50g and 50g contain 25g. However, 95.8% of people are not taking in adequate carbs.

Many people under-fuel because they over-prioritize protein or follow low-carb trends. RED-Scue provides steady, accessible energy for muscles, brain, and overall wellbeing.

Is RED-Scue a supplement?

No — RED-Scue is a whole-food product, not a pill or powder. It delivers real, nutrient-rich carbohydrates, healthy fats, and micronutrients for everyday energy.

How does RED-Scue fill common micronutrient gaps?

Carbohydrates (cassava, fufu, dates, maple syrup)

→ primary energy for training, recovery, and daily function

→ supports glycogen replenishment and helps reduce fatigue

Healthy fats (coconut oil, nuts, seeds)

→ sustained energy release and metabolic support

Micronutrients (moringa, cacao, seeds, nuts, baobab)

→ support iron, magnesium, calcium, and overall energy metabolism

Antioxidants (baobab, goji berries, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon)

→ support immune function and recovery from training stress

Natural nitrates (beetroot)

→ support blood flow and oxygen utilisation

Seed blend (pumpkin, flax, sunflower, chia, sesame)

→ provides essential fatty acids, fibre, and supports digestive and metabolic function

Which ingredients are used?

RED-Scue is built from:

  • real carbohydrate foods for energy
  • seeds and nuts for fats, minerals, and recovery support
  • fruit and plant ingredients for micronutrients and antioxidants
  • traditional spices for functional support and flavour

All combined into a food-first, carbohydrate-led system designed to support energy availability and consistent fuelling.

Our bar is built using cassava flour, plantain fufu, jujube dates, maple syrup, coconut oil, almond butter, Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, flaxseed, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, tahini, moringa, cacao, baobab, goji berries, beetroot, maca, vitamin D blend, spices, apple cider vinegar (ACV), and natural flavours (depending on the bar)

When should I eat RED-Scue and how many?

RED-Scue can be used throughout the day depending on your energy needs:

Most people will typically use 1–2 bars per day depending on training load and lifestyle demands.

Before exercise (30–90 minutes prior) – to top up energy stores before training, racing, or activity.

During longer sessions (>90 minutes) – as a food-first carbohydrate source for sustained energy.

After exercise – to support glycogen replenishment and recovery.

Between meals – as a convenient carbohydrate-rich snack during busy days.

During periods of increased demand – travel, exams, long workdays, shift work, parenting, or physically demanding jobs.

RED-Scue was created around a simple principle: carbohydrates are not just for sport—they are a fundamental fuel source for performance, recovery, brain function, and everyday life. Whether you're training for a marathon, heading into a long meeting, or simply trying to meet your energy needs, RED-Scue helps make fuelling more practical and accessible.

Why is RED-Scue food-first?

RED-Scue prioritises real food over powders and synthetic sports nutrition systems.

Food-first fuelling supports:

  • more natural digestion
  • consistent energy intake habits
  • reduced reliance on ultra-processed performance products
  • long-term behavioural change, not short-term fixes

What allergens are in RED-Scue?

Our bars are

  • Dairy Free
  • Vegan & Vegetarian
  • Caffeine free

They contain

  • Almond, brazil nuts, sesame
  • May contain: gluten, mustard, peanuts (from traces in ingredients)

Is RED-Scue gut-friendly?

We recognise that many people dealing with underfuelling, high training stress, or RED-S/low energy availability often experience:

  • Increased gut sensitivity
  • Bloating or digestive discomfort
  • Reduced tolerance to certain foods
  • Higher overall physiological stress

So RED-Scue is designed to be:

  • gentle on digestion
  • easy to tolerate under stress
  • supportive of energy replenishment without common irritants

Is RED-Scue backed by science?

RED-Scue is built around what the evidence shows about energy availability and carbohydrates, not diet trends.

Daily carbohydrate needs

  • ~1 hour moderate training/day: 5–7 g/kg body weight/day or 30-60g for 1 hour+ of exercise
  • Fewer than 5% of athletes meet carbohydrate requirements
  • Low energy and carb availability — not training volume alone — drives RED-S and LEA

How do I use RED-Scue?

Bars: Pre, during, or post-training; anytime energy is low. Fuelling on-the-go
Fuelling jar: Straight from the jar, in yogurt, baked.

RED-S is caused by chronic underfuelling over time, so 1 RED-Scue bar won't solve everything; it must be taken consistently.

Take it in the morning, as a snack between sessions or during the workday. It can also be taken at night due to its magnesium content for good sleep.
