FUEL WITHOUT FEAR
Fuelling should not be another challenge to overcome. You need a routine that gives you confidence, supports your training and helps you enjoy your sport.
About RED-Scue

What is RED-Scue?
RED-Scue is a carbohydrate-first sports nutrition brand creating real-food energy bars designed to help athletes fuel training, racing and recovery. Built around cassava (fufu) and plantain, RED-Scue provides 38g of carbohydrates per bar and 65g per jar from whole-food ingredients that are designed to be enjoyable to eat and naturally gentle on the gut.
What inspired the creation of RED-Scue?
I started as a Spanish national track athlete, but after years of training I tore my Achilles in 2021. Looking back, I realised I hadn't simply been unlucky—I had been underfuelled.
Like many athletes, I believed prioritising protein was enough. I didn't understand how important carbohydrates and total energy intake were for supporting heavy training loads.
While competing with the Spanish national team at the Cross de Italica in Sevilla, I learned from East African athletes about the role of traditional carbohydrate-rich foods like cassava and plantain.
When I started fuelling differently, I felt the difference. The only problem was practicality. Traditional fufu wasn't something you could carry in a running belt or cycling pocket.
So I created RED-Scue.
RED-Scue was created from personal experience. After years of training and racing, I saw how many athletes struggled with fuelling — not because they didn’t understand the importance of carbohydrates, but because traditional sports nutrition often felt difficult to consume, overly processed or caused gut issues.
I experienced this myself: gels that didn’t stay down, uncertainty around race-day fuelling and the constant worry that nutrition would let me down when I needed it most. RED-Scue was created to make sports nutrition feel like real food again.
What problem does RED-Scue solve for athletes?
Many athletes know they need carbohydrates, but struggle to consistently get enough fuel in. Traditional options can feel repetitive, highly processed or difficult to tolerate.
RED-Scue solves this by providing a convenient, real-food carbohydrate source that helps athletes fuel more consistently without forcing down products they don’t enjoy.
Why was RED-Scue created?
Too often we see athletes training on too little carbohydrate, relying on protein bars, sweets, bananas or gels that don't suit them or aren't enough to meet their training demands. The result can be low energy, poor recovery and inconsistent performance.
RED-Scue was created because fuelling should support performance, not become another challenge. Athletes shouldn’t have to choose between effective fuelling, enjoyment and gut comfort.
The goal was simple: create a carbohydrate-rich sports fuel that athletes actually look forward to eating.
How is RED-Scue different?
✓ Carb-first – approximately 38g of carbohydrates per bar to support training, racing and recovery.
✓ Carb diverse – built around cassava and plantain, giving athletes another whole-food carbohydrate source instead of relying on the same foods every day.
✓ Food-first – made with natural ingredients including dates, baobab, beetroot, moringa, maca, mushroom powder, berries, seeds and nut butters.
✓ Vegan & naturally non-gluten contaning – suitable for a wide range of athletes and dietary preferences.
✓ Gut-conscious – created by an athlete who struggled with gut issues and wanted a real-food carbohydrate option that could be practised with in training before race day.
RED-Scue isn't designed to replace every carbohydrate source in your diet.
It's designed to become part of your carbohydrate toolkit—making it easier to fuel consistently wherever training takes you.
Because when you absorb and use the fuel your body needs, you have the best chance to train well, recover well and keep improving.
Who is RED-Scue designed for?
RED-Scue is designed for anyone who trains and needs reliable carbohydrate fuel — from everyday runners and gym-goers to marathoners, cyclists, triathletes, HYROX athletes and elite competitors.
Is RED-Scue suitable for all types of athletes?
Yes. RED-Scue is designed for athletes across different sports, abilities and training levels. Whether you are preparing for your first race or competing at the highest level, carbohydrates are a key part of supporting performance.
Can I use RED-Scue if I’m not an elite athlete?
Absolutely. RED-Scue is designed for anyone who trains — from first-time runners and gym-goers to experienced endurance athletes.
You don’t need to be competing at an elite level to benefit from fuelling properly. If you are asking your body to work hard, it needs the energy to support that work.
Where should I start?
We would suggest starting with our Discovery Pack.
It allows you to:
✓ Try all five flavours
✓ Find the textures and flavours you enjoy most
✓ Practise using them around training
✓ Build a fuelling routine that feels sustainable
We also offer both RED-Scue Bars and Fuelling Jars depending on what fits best around your routine — whether you need something before training, after a session, or a convenient option during a busy day.
Fuelling & Performance

Why is underfuelling so common among athletes?
Underfuelling is common because athletes often underestimate how much energy training requires. Many understand that carbohydrates are important but struggle to consume enough, especially around busy schedules, intense training blocks or when traditional sports nutrition feels difficult to tolerate.
Many active people unintentionally under-eat due to:
- lack of time
- diet culture and food restriction trends
- misinformation about carbohydrates
- appetite suppression from training or stress
- over-focus on protein over total energy intake
This leads to a widespread but often unrecognised issue: insufficient energy for daily function, training, and recovery.
How do I know if I’m underfuelling?
Common signs can include:
- Constant fatigue
- Poor recovery
- Low energy during sessions
- Struggling to complete training
- Nauseous/no hunger
- Declining performance
Difficulty maintaining consistency
Underfuelling is not always obvious. Many athletes simply think they need to train harder when they actually need to fuel better.
What is the biggest fuelling mistake beginners make?
Waiting until race day to think about nutrition.
Fuelling is a skill — just like pacing, training and race strategy.
The earlier you practise it, the more confident you become.
Which RED-Scue bar should I choose?
The best RED-Scue flavour is ultimately the one you enjoy enough to keep fuelling with — because consistency is what drives performance.
Pre-Race / Pre-Training Fuel (1–3 hours before)

A light, comforting flavour that works well as part of a morning fuelling routine before training or racing.

Recovery snacks
Refuelling after races
Salted Caramel
Also a great post-training option when you want something satisfying after a demanding session.
Why are carbohydrates important for performance?
Carbohydrates are the body's preferred fuel source for moderate to high-intensity exercise. They help maintain glycogen stores, support training quality, delay fatigue and provide the energy needed to perform at your best.
- Improved energy availability
- Better training performance
- Faster recovery
- Reduced fatigue
- Gut-friendly fuelling
- Simple carbohydrate intake strategy
I’m new to fuelling. Do I really need carbohydrates?
Yes. Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred fuel source for moderate to high-intensity exercise.
Whether you’re training for your first 5K, a marathon, a cycling event or simply building fitness, carbohydrates help support energy, training quality and recovery.
Fuelling is not just for professional athletes — it is a tool that helps everyone get more from their training.
What if I haven't fuelled enough for a long time?
Start low. Build up.
Introducing any new fuelling product works best when you give your gut time to adapt.
If you are new to carbohydrate fuelling, start with ½–1 RED-Scue bar and gradually increase your intake as your body gets used to it. This is especially important if you are not used to higher carbohydrate foods or increasing fibre intake.
Your gut is trainable — just like your muscles. Practise fuelling during training, not for the first time on race day.
Top tip: Spread your carbohydrate intake across the day, stay hydrated, and find the amount that works best for your training, goals, and individual tolerance.
What happens when athletes don’t fuel enough?
Underfuelling doesn’t just affect one session. It can impact energy levels, recovery, adaptation to training, mood, consistency and overall performance.
When athletes consistently don’t meet their energy and carbohydrate needs, training can become harder and recovery can suffer.
How does RED-Scue support training, recovery and performance?
RED-Scue provides a convenient source of carbohydrates to help athletes meet their fuelling needs before, during or after training. The 38g of carbohydrates per bar help support energy availability, glycogen replenishment and recovery.
When should I eat RED-Scue?
RED-Scue is designed to help you meet your carbohydrate needs around training, recovery and everyday life.
Each bar provides approximately 38g of carbohydrates from cassava and plantain, making it a convenient real-food fuel option when your body needs more energy.
Before training or racing
1 RED-Scue bar 1–3 hours before exercise
Ideal for:
- Morning training sessions
- Race-day fuelling
- Long runs, rides or workouts
- High-intensity sessions
Carbohydrates before exercise help top up glycogen stores and provide the energy needed to train and perform well.
After training or racing
1 RED-Scue bar after exercise, alongside protein
Ideal for:
- Hard training sessions
- Long endurance workouts
- Race recovery
- Back-to-back training days
Carbohydrates after exercise help replenish energy stores and support recovery.
Between meals
A convenient carbohydrate-rich snack during busy days
RED-Scue can help bridge the gap between meals when you need extra energy, especially around training.
Ideal for:
- Busy workdays
- Long days on your feet
- Active lifestyles
- When you need a quick, nutritious snack
During periods of increased demand
Your energy needs increase when life and training demands increase.
RED-Scue can support fuelling during:
- Travel
- Exams
- Long workdays
- Shift work
- Parenting
- Physically demanding jobs
- Heavy training blocks
- Packed lunch
Because fuelling isn’t just about race day — it’s about having enough energy to support everything you ask your body to do.
How many RED-Scue bars should I have?
This depends on your training demands, goals and overall fuelling needs.
A simple guide:
Short or easy sessions:
1 bar before or after training depending on your routine and goals.
Longer or harder sessions:
1 bar before training and/or after training to support energy and recovery.
Race preparation:
Use RED-Scue in the days and hours before your event as part of a carbohydrate-focused fuelling strategy.
The most important thing is consistency. Fuelling isn’t just about race day — it’s about creating the energy availability needed to train well, recover well and perform over time.
How is RED-Scue different from other bars?
Most sports or training nutrition and energy products are sticky gels, crumbly oat bars, or heavy, processed protein bars.
This means other bars are often:
- high protein positioning
- low-calorie or diet-focused marketing
- ultra-processed formulations
- isolated ingredients like maltodextrin
RED-Scue is different because it is:
- Carbohydrate-first (not protein-first)
- Built on root-based carbs (cassava & plantain)
- Oat-free
- No refined or synthetic performance ingredients
- Smooth texture (no crumbling or pieces sticking in your teeth)
It is the first product designed specifically around underfuelling risk and energy availability.
Why is RED-Scue a food-first approach to sports nutrition?
Because the body performs best on real, recognisable food sources, not synthetic formulas.
How do I use RED-Scue during training and racing?
RED-Scue can be eaten before, during or after exercise depending on your needs. During travel days or on the go.
Add into your carb stack.
What are the benefits of fuelling with RED-Scue?
RED-Scue helps athletes:
- Increase carbohydrate intake
- Support training energy
- Improve fuelling consistency
- Support recovery
- Reduce reliance on highly processed sports nutrition products
- Enjoy fuelling rather than seeing it as a chore
How does RED-Scue support training, recovery and performance?
Because it prioritises what athletes actually under-consume: carbohydrates for energy availability.
It delivers:
- Fast and sustained energy
- Glycogen replenishment
- Gut-friendly digestion
- Real food nutrient synergy

Which athletes fuel with cassava (fufu) and plantain-based foods?
Root-based carbohydrate fuelling is commonly used in East African endurance communities and is reflected in the diets of elite athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge, who rely on staple carbohydrate foods for performance.
Why does RED-Scue work for performance?
- Improved energy availability
- Better training performance
- Faster recovery
- Reduced fatigue
- Gut-friendly fuelling
- Simple carbohydrate intake strategy
What gluten-free flours are used in RED-Scue?
RED-Scue uses naturally gluten-free root flours, primarily:
- Cassava (fufu base)
- Plantain
These provide digestible, performance-focused carbohydrates.
How is cassava and plantain different from a banana, oats, gels or carbohydrate mixes?
All of these options can provide carbohydrates, and there is a place for different fuelling strategies.
The difference is the format and experience.
Bananas:
A great natural carbohydrate source, but cause a quick spike and crash, not filling, be harder to carry, store and consume during sessions.
Oats:
Provide carbohydrates and fibre, but can feel heavier and may not always be ideal immediately before or during intense exercise.
Gels:
Convenient and concentrated, but some athletes find them overly sweet, difficult to tolerate or unpleasant to consume.
Carbohydrate mixes:
Efficient for delivering carbohydrates through drinks, but they may not provide the same food experience.
Cassava and plantain:
Provide a real-food carbohydrate foundation in a convenient bar format, helping athletes fuel with something that feels closer to food while still supporting performance.
How are they different to other bars?
They are also different from many traditional sports snacks because they are:
✓ Oat-free
✓ Non-gluten containing
✓ Vegan
✓ Made with cassava and plantain as the carbohydrate foundation
✓ Satiating (70g compared to many usual 35g bars)
Everyone experiences texture differently, which is why our Discovery Pack is a great way to try all five flavours and find the ones you enjoy most.
Why use cassava and plantain as the foundation?
Because they are:
- Easily digestible
- Naturally gluten-free
- Rich in complex carbohydrates
- Stable energy sources for training
- Contain naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and fibre
Is RED-Scue a supplement?
No — RED-Scue is a whole-food product, not a pill or powder. It delivers real, nutrient-rich carbohydrates, healthy fats, and micronutrients for everyday energy.
How does RED-Scue help support common micronutrient gaps?
Through whole-food ingredients containing:
- B vitamins
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin A
- Iron
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Potassium
- Sodium
- Manganese
These work together to support energy metabolism, hydration, and recovery.
What is carbohydrate diversity?
Carbohydrate diversity means getting your quality carbohydrates from a variety of sources rather than relying on one single fuel.
Different carbohydrate sources can provide different textures, flavours, nutrients and digestion experiences.
Examples include:
- Cassava
- Plantain
- Rice
- Potatoes
- Oats
- Fruit
RED-Scue brings diversity into sports fuelling by using cassava and plantain as the foundation.

It is designed to be:
- Oat-free
- Root-carbohydrate based

Is RED-Scue backed by science?

- ~1 hour moderate training/day: 5–7 g/kg body weight/day or 30-60g for 1 hour+ of exercise
- Fewer than 5% of athletes meet carbohydrate requirements
- Low energy and carb availability — not training volume alone — drives RED-S and LEA
RED-S & Athlete Health
Collapsible content
What are RED-S and Low Energy Availability (LEA)?
RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) occurs when an athlete’s energy intake is not enough to support both exercise demands and the body’s normal functions.
Low Energy Availability (LEA) refers to having insufficient energy remaining after exercise demands are accounted for. This can affect health, recovery and performance.
Why does underfuelling matter for long-term performance?
Consistent underfuelling can affect the ability to train well, recover effectively and maintain performance over time. Building strong fuelling habits helps athletes train consistently and support long-term progress.
I'm not an endurance athlete. Are RED-Scue products suitable for me?
Yes. RED-Scue is not only for endurance athletes.
If you’re returning to the gym and focusing on rebuilding strength, carbohydrates are an important part of that process.
Strength and conditioning requires lots of fuel, and carbohydrates are the main fuelling source — particularly after periods of Low Energy Availability (LEA) and RED-S.
Carbohydrates help support:
✓ Training quality
✓ Muscle glycogen replenishment
✓ Recovery between sessions
✓ Energy availability
✓ Getting more from your training
RED-Scue is a practical way to add more carbohydrate and energy into your day and start the fuelling process without the overwhelm.
RED-Scue can work well:
Before training → to help you start fuelled
After training → to support recovery
Busy days → when you need convenient energy
Who can be affected by RED-S and underfuelling?
RED-S and underfuelling can affect athletes of all genders, ages and sports. It is not limited to elite athletes — anyone with high training demands and insufficient fuelling can be at risk.
How does RED-Scue help athletes fuel consistently?
RED-Scue makes carbohydrate intake simpler by providing a convenient, enjoyable fuel source that fits easily into training routines.

Are RED-Scue bars suitable for sensitive digestion?
This is such an important question.
A lot of people come to RED-Scue because they have struggled with traditional sports bars or fuels that feel too heavy, overly processed or difficult to tolerate.
Gels, protein bars, carb mixes and other sports products did not work well for me after struggling with IBS and RED-S. I experienced many of the same challenges athletes face — wanting to fuel properly but finding options that did not feel comfortable.
RED-Scue was created because I personally struggled with fuelling and digestion. I wanted a carbohydrate option that felt easier to use while still providing the energy needed for training.
Cassava and plantain are traditional carbohydrate sources used around the world and were chosen as the foundation for RED-Scue because they provide a practical carbohydrate source while creating a smooth, enjoyable texture.
Of course, every gut is different. If you have a very sensitive digestive system, we recommend introducing any new food gradually and testing it during training first.
