The RED-Scue® Energy Fuelling Jar is a whole-food, carbohydrate-forward fuelling product designed to support athletes and active people who struggle with low energy availability (LEA) and the demands of high training loads. Built by someone with lived experience of under-fuelling, RED-Scue offers a practical, digestible, nutrient-dense way to fuel training, recovery, and everyday performance — without relying on low-carb snacks, protein-only bars, or “eat less, train more” culture.
We’re proud to be the first fuelling jar to include fufu flour, a traditional West African carbohydrate staple historically used in endurance-based food cultures. Combined with dried fruits, nuts, seeds, cacao, maple syrup, warming spices, and our RED-Scue Whole-Food Vitamin C & D Blend, each jar delivers steady energy to support training, cognitive performance, and recovery.
RED-Scue isn’t about restriction.
It’s about fuelling fully — for training, thinking, creating, and living well.
Why Fufu Flour?
Fufu flour is a traditional carbohydrate staple made from African root crops and grains. In RED-Scue, it acts as a slow, steady energy base to support muscle glycogen, brain fuel, and sustained performance.
Naturally provides:
- Carbohydrates – primary fuel for muscles and brain
- Dietary fibre – supports digestion and satiety
- Potassium – supports muscle and nerve function
- Iron (naturally occurring) – supports oxygen transport
- Vitamin C (from whole-food pairings in RED-Scue) – supports immune function and iron absorption
RED-Scue uses fufu flour as a whole-food carbohydrate base, inspired by African endurance fuelling traditions and paired with nutrient-dense whole foods for functional energy.
Why We Built RED-Scue
Modern sport and fitness culture has normalised chronic under-fuelling, particularly through carbohydrate restriction.
- Only ~4% of athletes meet carbohydrate intake recommendations
(Melin et al., 2019, British Journal of Sports Medicine) -
Low energy availability is widespread across recreational and elite sport populations
(Hackney et al., 2025, International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance) - Low carbohydrate intake is consistently linked to fatigue, impaired recovery, hormonal disruption, and injury risk in athletes
RED-Scue exists to make fuelling simple, practical, and culturally grounded — without diet culture, fear of carbs, or reliance on ultra-processed sports products.
Science-Backed Why Carbs Matter
Brain & Cognition
Carbohydrates supply ~20% of daily energy needs of the brain. Adequate carb intake is associated with:
- Improved focus & attention
- Better mood & decision-making
- Reduced mental fatigue
(Boyle et al., 2018, Nutrients; AJCN, 2002; Clinical Nutrition, 2021)
Body & Performance
Carbohydrates:
- Restore muscle glycogen
- Support training intensity & speed
- Reduce injury risk associated with low energy availability
(Bergström & Hultman; Jeukendrup et al., 2011)
Endurance Fuelling
During long sessions, ~30–90 g carbohydrate per hour helps sustain performance and delay fatigue
(Jeukendrup et al., 2011)
RED-S Context
- Low energy availability is associated with:
- Fatigue
- Impaired recovery
- Hormonal disruption
- Bone stress injuries
RED-Scue is designed to support adequate energy intake as part of a balanced fuelling strategy.
African Endurance Fuelling: What Kenyan Runners Teach Us
- Elite Kenyan endurance runners provide one of the strongest real-world examples of carb-first fuelling:
- Diets are traditionally high in carbohydrates, based on maize, beans, root crops, and grains
- Whole foods provide sustained energy with high micronutrient density
- Training is fuelled by simple, consistent carbohydrate availability, not high-protein restriction
- Hydration is often ad libitum (water + tea), with natural electrolyte balance maintained
(Onywera et al., 2004; Wilber & Pitsiladis, 2012; Onywera et al., 2004; research on Kenyan endurance camps)
RED-Scue draws from these principles: carbohydrate-first, whole-food, culturally grounded fuelling for sustainable performance.
RED-S, Qi & Going Back to Basics
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi deficiency presents as:
- Fatigue
- Poor recovery
- Low resilience
- Coldness, weakness, digestive strain
This mirrors the lived experience of RED-S and chronic under-fuelling in modern sport.
RED-Scue bridges:
- Sports science (energy availability, glycogen restoration)
- African endurance food traditions
- Qi-supportive food philosophy (warm, digestible, grounding carbohydrates + minerals)
Alternative medicinal food as foundational energy.
The Commercialisation of Protein (and What We’ve Lost)
Protein has been heavily commercialised:
- Global protein market valued at ~$27.5bn (2024), projected to nearly double by 2030
- Ultra-processed protein bars, cereals, shakes, yoghurts dominate sports retail
- Social media equates protein with discipline, control, and “fitness morality”
But over-prioritising protein often:
- Crowds out carbohydrates and fibre
- Increases ultra-processed food intake
- Encourages fuelling inadequacy in endurance and high-volume training
RED-Scue intentionally centres carbohydrates first, with balanced fats and protein from whole foods — returning fuelling to basics, tradition, and physiology.
Micronutrient Support (Whole-Food Sources)
- Vitamin C + cacao – collagen & soft tissue support
- Calcium + nuts/seeds – bone health
- Iron + seeds – oxygen transport
- Healthy fats + plant protein – sustained energy
- Electrolytes + spices – recovery support
Health Benefits;
- Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- Vitamin C enhances iron absorption
- Vitamin D contributes to normal bone and muscle function
- Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones
How to Enjoy RED-Scue
- Straight from the jar
- Rolled into energy balls or baked cookies (160°C, 8–12 mins)
- Stirred into yoghurt, smoothies, or spread on toast/crackers
Ideal pre-, during-, or post-training, and for everyday fuelling.

Our Mission
We founded Global RED-S Awareness Day, Week & Month (Nov 21st) to challenge chronic under-fuelling in sport. RED-Scue exists to make fuelling simple, culturally grounded, and sustainable — without restriction, shame, or fear of carbs.
