RED-Scue FACTS ❤️
The little (or rather big things) that make RED-Scue different
CARB-FIRST. FOOD-FIRST. FUEL WITHOUT FEAR.
RED-Scue® was created around a simple idea: sports fuel should actually feel like food.
Not something you have to force down. Not something you only reach for because you think you should.
Something you genuinely want to eat — before, during, after training, or simply when your day demands more fuel.
Here are some of the facts behind RED-Scue.
1. RED-Scue stands for REDs × Rescue
The name combines REDs — Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport — with Rescue.
RED-Scue was created to make fuelling more practical, enjoyable and accessible, while helping start better conversations around carbohydrate and energy availability.
2. It's carbohydrate-first
A RED-Scue bar weighs 70g and contains approximately 38g of carbohydrate.
Carbohydrate is a key fuel source for exercise, particularly as training intensity and duration increase.
RED-Scue is built around carbohydrate rather than making protein the headline.
CARBS ARE FUEL.
3. Why is the bar 70g?
Because we wanted to put a meaningful amount of fuel into one bar.
Many energy bars sit around 35g, whereas a RED-Scue bar is 70g.
That's a deliberate choice: enough food and carbohydrate to be useful for training and racing, while still being practical to carry.
70g of food.
38g of carbohydrate.
One bar.
4. Cassava + plantain are at the heart of it
The main carbohydrate base is cassava (fufu) and plantain.
Both are carbohydrate-rich staple foods used across cultures and have long been part of traditional food systems.
For RED-Scue, they provide a different way to build modern sports fuel around root and plant carbohydrates.
5. Why cassava and plantain?
Because carbohydrate doesn't have to come from the same handful of ingredients.
Cassava and plantain bring starch-rich carbohydrate, while dates and other ingredients add naturally occurring sugars and nutritional variety.
That creates a more diverse carbohydrate profile — and gives athletes another way to fuel.
6. The founder connection
RED-Scue was born from lived experience.
After years as an athlete, including representing Spain, I eventually tore my Achilles.
Looking back, I realised I hadn't been fuelling enough for the training I was asking my body to do.
I wanted something that felt more like real food, tasted good and made fuelling easier to actually stick with.
So I made it.
7. It isn't just about sport
RED-Scue can be used:
Before training.
During longer sessions.
After training.
Between meals.
On busy days.
While travelling.
On race day.
Because fuelling isn't only something that happens when your watch starts recording.
8. What's actually inside?
Our bars are made with food-derived ingredients including:
Cassava & plantain flour, dates, almond butter, tahini, maple syrup, coconut oil, cacao, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, goji berries, baobab, moringa, beetroot, chia seeds, spices and sea salt.
No ingredient percentages are hidden behind a generic blend.
You can see what you're eating.
9. Why beetroot?
Beetroot naturally contains dietary nitrate.
Dietary nitrate can be converted through the nitrate → nitrite → nitric oxide pathway and has been widely studied in sports nutrition.
Importantly, the evidence depends on factors such as dose, timing and the athlete, so RED-Scue doesn't claim that the beetroot in a bar provides a specific performance dose.
It's simply one of the naturally occurring ingredients we choose to include.
10. Why baobab?
Baobab is a fruit naturally rich in vitamin C and fibre.
It adds nutritional variety to the recipe while fitting the RED-Scue approach of using interesting, food-based ingredients.
11. Why moringa?
Moringa is a nutrient-rich leafy plant used as a food ingredient in many parts of the world.
We use it to add plant-based nutritional variety — not because there is one magic superfood.
12. And the mushroom?
Mushroom is another food-derived ingredient included for nutritional variety and ingredient diversity.
RED-Scue isn't about one miracle ingredient.
It's about what the ingredients can do together.
13. Why vitamin C, D, iron and calcium matter
These nutrients all have important roles in the body.
Vitamin C contributes to normal immune function, collagen formation and iron absorption.
Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport and energy-yielding metabolism.
Calcium contributes to normal muscle function and maintenance of normal bones.
Vitamin D contributes to normal muscle function, bones and immune function.
Iron, vitamin D and calcium are also recognised areas of nutritional concern in some athlete populations — although that does not mean every athlete is deficient.
14. The nutrition numbers
PER 70G BAR
38g carbohydrate
7.1g protein
4.4g fibre
16.1g fat
4.1g saturates
13.3g sugars
0.08g salt
15. Why protein, fat and fibre?
Because carbohydrate-first doesn't mean carbohydrate-only.
Protein, fat and fibre are naturally part of the food-based recipe.
The goal is a bar that provides meaningful carbohydrate while still feeling substantial and satisfying.
16. No oats
RED-Scue is built around cassava + plantain, rather than oats.
That's one of the things that makes the range different — and gives athletes another carbohydrate option.
17. What RED-Scue doesn't use
RED-Scue bars contain:
No oats
No maltodextrin
No artificial sweeteners
No emulsifiers
No potassium sorbate
No added refined sugar
No dairy
No animal ingredients
They're also made without gluten-containing ingredients.
Contains almonds and sesame. May contain peanuts, gluten and mustard.
18. Food-first doesn't mean making everything yourself
One of the biggest ideas behind RED-Scue is:
REAL FOOD WITHOUT HAVING TO MAKE IT YOURSELF.
You don't always have time to cook cassava, prepare plantain, make a snack and pack it for training.
Sometimes you just need to grab something and go.
That's what RED-Scue is for.
19. The packaging is part of the design
The bar packaging is transparent, so you can actually see the product.
We wanted the food to be visible rather than hidden behind opaque packaging.
It also has a rip tab at the top, making it easier to open while moving.
The outer boxes are recyclable.
And the silver-style packaging is inspired by the iconic foil athletes wrap themselves in after racing.
See the bar. Rip it open. Fuel on the move.
20. It was designed to travel
A 70g bar is substantial — but it's still designed to fit into places athletes actually carry fuel:
Running belts.
Cycling jersey pockets.
Race bags.
Gym bags.
Backpacks.
Desk drawers.
Cars.
Because the best fuelling strategy is often the one that's actually there when you need it.
21. RED-Scue is soft, smooth and fudgy
No dry, crumbly texture.
No need for cutlery.
Just a soft, substantial bar designed to be easy to eat on the move.
22. The flavours
RED-Scue currently comes in:
Chocolate Chip
Cacao
Vanilla Cinnamon
Salted Caramel
Orange Zest
Lemon Drizzle
Because fuelling shouldn't have to taste the same every day.
23. It's not just for elite athletes
You don't need to be racing professionally to need carbohydrate.
RED-Scue is for runners, cyclists, HYROX athletes, swimmers, strength athletes, triathletes, walkers, gym-goers — and anyone with an active life who needs convenient fuel.
You don't have to earn your food by being an athlete.
24. RED-Scue is made in the UK
The bars are made in the UK and developed around a food-first approach to sports nutrition.
25. Some RED-Scue facts you might not know
70g — the weight of one bar.
38g — the carbohydrate in one bar.
Transparent packaging — so you can actually see the food.
Rip tab — designed for opening on the move.
Cassava + plantain — the foundation of the carbohydrate recipe.
No oats — because we wanted to build something different.
Made in the UK — developed and produced here.
Recyclable boxes — because the packaging matters too.
RED-S × Rescue — that's where the name comes from.
Food-first — because sports fuel should still feel like food.
26. The simplest RED-Scue fact?
Sports fuel shouldn't be a suffer fest.
If you don't enjoy what you're fuelling with, it's harder to make fuelling consistent.
So RED-Scue is built around one very simple question:
Would I actually want to eat this?
Because fuel works best when you actually use it.
REAL FOOD.
REAL CARBS.
REAL FUEL.
RED-Scue®
CARB-FIRST. FOOD-FIRST. FUEL WITHOUT FEAR.
