Fuel Without Fear

FAQs

Everything you need to know about RED-Scue fuel, our ingredients, our carbs and why we made sports fuel differently.

What is RED-Scue?
Food-first. Carb-first. Fuel Without Fear.

RED-Scue is carbohydrate-first sports fuel made from cassava, plantain, dates and other real-food ingredients for before, during and after training.

Each 70g bar provides around 38g carbohydrate.

RED-Scue = RED-S × Rescue.

It was born after I tore my Achilles and realised I hadn't been fuelling enough for the training I was doing.
What makes RED-Scue different?
We built it from the carbohydrate out.

RED-Scue is:
  • 38g carbohydrate per 70g bar
  • Cassava + plantain powered
  • Food-first and carbohydrate-first
  • Soft, smooth and fudgy
  • Vegan and dairy-free
  • Caffeine-free
  • No oats
  • No maltodextrin
  • No refined sugar
  • No artificial sweeteners
  • No emulsifiers
  • No potassium sorbate
  • Designed for running belts and cycling jersey pockets
  • Easy-open rip tab
  • Transparent packaging
  • Made in the UK

Real food without having to make it yourself.
Why carbohydrate-first?
Carbohydrate is a key fuel source for training and racing.

We wanted to build sports fuel around real, carbohydrate-rich foods rather than making protein the starting point.

Carbs for fuel. Food for nutrition.
Why is the bar 70g?
70g gives you a proper piece of fuel.

That's around 38g carbohydrate alongside protein, fibre and fats.

Big enough to feel like food. Small enough to carry.
70g. 38g carbs. Built for real training.
Why cassava + plantain?
Cassava and plantain are naturally carbohydrate-rich root and fruit foods with long histories in traditional diets.

Cassava provides a starchy carbohydrate base, while plantain adds another whole-food carbohydrate source.

Using different carbohydrate sources creates carb diversity and fuelling flexibility.

Root + fruit + dates = the RED-Scue foundation.
Who inspired the cassava + plantain approach?
Part of the inspiration came from living and training in Spain alongside African endurance runners and seeing how naturally carbohydrate-rich foods fitted into serious training.

Eliud Kipchoge is one of the athletes who has helped bring global attention to the traditional, carbohydrate-rich food culture surrounding Kenyan endurance running.

Foods such as ugali, cassava, plantain and other starchy staples show that performance fuel doesn't have to start with a highly engineered sports product.

We took that food-first idea and made it portable.
What are the benefits of plant-based root carbs?
Root and fruit carbohydrates give you different food sources of carbohydrate rather than relying on one isolated ingredient.

They can contribute to:
  • Carbohydrate availability for training
  • Dietary variety
  • Fibre and micronutrient intake
  • Different textures and digestion profiles
  • More flexibility in how you fuel

More carbohydrate diversity = more ways to fuel.
How does RED-Scue provide carbohydrate?
RED-Scue combines carbohydrate from cassava, plantain, dates and maple syrup rather than relying on one carbohydrate source.

The food-based recipe provides a mix of starches and naturally occurring sugars within a soft, moist texture.

The aim is usable carbohydrate that feels like food without sitting like a heavy meal.

Everyone digests differently, so the best approach is to practise your fuelling during training.
What's actually in a RED-Scue bar?
Cassava (Fufu) & Plantain Flour
Dates
Nut Butter (Almonds)
Tahini (Sesame)
Maple Syrup
Coconut Oil
Organic Cacao
TCM Berry & Seed Mix
Pumpkin Seeds
Sunflower Seeds
Goji Berries
Baobab
Moringa
Beetroot
Chia Seeds
Spices
Celtic Sea Salt

Every ingredient has a job.
Carbohydrate · flavour · texture · fats · fibre · nutritional variety
What are the nutrition numbers?
Per 70g bar:
38g Carbohydrate
7.1g Protein
4.4g Fibre
16.1g Fat
4.1g Saturates
13.3g Sugars
0.08g Salt
The headline number: 38g carbohydrate.
Why protein, fat and fibre too?
Because carbohydrate-first doesn't mean carbohydrate-only.

Nuts, seeds, tahini, dates, cassava and plantain naturally contribute protein, fats and fibre.

Food-first means looking at the whole recipe.
Why vitamin C, D, iron and calcium?
These are important nutrients for active bodies.

Iron — oxygen transport and normal energy metabolism.

Calcium — normal muscle function and bones.

Vitamin D — normal muscle function, bones and immune function.

Vitamin C — immune function, collagen formation and iron absorption.

Iron, vitamin D and calcium are among the micronutrients commonly highlighted in athlete nutrition research, particularly where energy or dietary intake is inadequate.

Fuel the training. Bring nutritional variety too.
Why baobab?
Baobab adds fruit-derived nutritional variety and is naturally associated with vitamin C and fibre.

Vitamin C also helps with iron absorption.
Why moringa?
Moringa is a nutrient-rich leafy plant that adds another type of plant food to the recipe.

It is part of our wider approach to carb + food + nutritional variety.
Why beetroot?
Beetroot naturally contains dietary nitrate.

Nitrate can be converted in the body into nitric oxide, which is involved in blood flow and vascular function.

Dietary nitrate has been widely researched in sports nutrition, particularly around exercise efficiency and endurance.

We use beetroot as part of the food mix — not as a magic performance ingredient.
Why mushroom?
Mushroom adds another food-derived ingredient to the recipe.

Different mushrooms contain different nutrients and bioactive compounds, so we use it as part of our broader approach to ingredient diversity.
Why is RED-Scue gut-friendly?
RED-Scue is designed around a food-first ingredient philosophy.

The bars are soft, smooth and fudgy rather than dry or crumbly.

We use familiar ingredients and don't use maltodextrin, artificial sweeteners or emulsifiers.

Real food. Soft texture. Easy to eat.
What doesn't go into RED-Scue?
No oats · No maltodextrin · No refined sugar · No artificial sweeteners · No emulsifiers · No potassium sorbate

Also vegan, dairy-free and caffeine-free.
What are the allergens?

When can I eat RED-Scue?
Before: carbohydrate-rich fuel.

During: solid carbohydrate fuel.

After: convenient food as part of recovery.

Also for travel, work, camping, commuting and long days.
Why did you create RED-Scue?
After tearing my Achilles, I realised I hadn't been fuelling enough for the training I was doing.

I wanted sports fuel that felt like real food and that I actually wanted to eat.

So I made it.

RED-Scue = RED-S × Rescue.
Why traditional carbohydrate-rich foods?
Foods such as ugali, cassava and plantain have long been part of carbohydrate-rich food cultures.

Elite Kenyan distance running has also brought global attention to this food-first approach.

Performance fuel doesn't have to be highly engineered.
Why carb diversity?
Different carbohydrate foods give you different ways to fuel.

RED-Scue combines starch-rich cassava and plantain with dates and maple syrup.

That gives you carbohydrate variety and flexibility within one food.
What are the breakfast jars?
Carbohydrate-rich, food-first breakfast fuel.

Made with ingredients including:

Cassava · Plantain · Sorghum · Dates

They contain more protein than the bars and are designed for race mornings, training, travel and busy days.
What flavours are available?
Chocolate Chip · Cacao · Vanilla Cinnamon · Salted Caramel · Orange Zest · Lemon Drizzle

Sports fuel you actually want to eat.
What makes the packaging different?

The silver foil look is inspired by the emergency blankets athletes wrap themselves in after races.

Even our flyers can become race-bib stickers.
