For years, carbohydrates have been misunderstood.

Many new athletes are told:

“Cut carbs to get lean.”
“Carbs make you gain weight.”
“You’ll be faster if you eat less.”

But when you start training and racing, your body is asking for something different.

Carbohydrates are not the enemy. They are your training fuel.

The goal is not to eat unlimited carbs. The goal is to understand which carbohydrates, when to eat them, and how they help you perform.


Your body is not a machine that runs on motivation — it runs on fuel

When you train, your body uses stored carbohydrate called glycogen.

Glycogen is stored in your muscles and liver and becomes your main source of energy when exercise intensity increases.

This is why runners, cyclists, swimmers, triathletes and team sport athletes rely heavily on carbohydrates.

  • Familiar whole-food foundation

Plantain

Plantain is a starchy fruit used in many cuisines around the world.

It provides:

  • Carbohydrates for energy
  • Potassium to support normal muscle function
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin B6
  • Fibre

Together, cassava and plantain create a carbohydrate-first foundation for fuelling.


What is carb diversity — and why should you care?

Carb diversity means not relying on only one carbohydrate source.

Instead of thinking:

“I only eat oats.”
“I only eat protein.”
“I only use gels on race day.”

Think:

“I have a toolkit of carbohydrates that support different moments.”

When you first start training, it is tempting to think:

“I need to lose weight first.”

“I need to cut carbs.”

But your biggest performance improvement often comes from learning how to fuel properly.

Your body needs energy to:

  • Adapt to training
  • Build fitness
  • Recover
  • Stay healthy
  • Show up consistently

The strongest athletes are not the ones who eat the least.

They are the ones who understand how to fuel the work they are asking their body to do.


Start simple: your first athlete fuelling rules

You do not need to completely change your diet overnight.

Start with:

1. Eat carbohydrates every day

Training days and rest days.

2. Put carbohydrates around your sessions

Before = fuel the work
After = recover and rebuild

3. Practise your race fuel in training

Your gut is trainable.

4. Build your carbohydrate toolkit

Find the foods that make you feel energised, comfortable and confident.
